What we do for Government.
Macquarie has secured both local and federal governments since 2001. We are currently one of only three providers entrusted to secure the Federal Government against threats both here and abroad. This covers a range of services, from cloud through to internet security and email services.
These specific federal government services, are provided by Macquarie Government, our business unit specially configured for this task and are setup in Canberra and in Sydney. Our government business is growing, not only organically, but with SaaS and companies also wanting direct access to government clients.

What is a secure internet gateway?
An SIG is a secure connection to the internet that protects internal IT systems, websites, and networks from cyber threats. A typical government agency or business has thousands of genuine online visitors daily. It’s a siege when the fortress gate is open to legitimate visitors while keeping invaders out. To do this, you need a strong gate and smart gatekeeper, a system that can defend against the invading hordes while sorting the good from the bad, no matter how sneaky their plan is.
Threats are global and they come in many forms. Viruses, Spam, Malware, DDoS attacks, Trojans – some things never change, and more recently box social media engineered attacks and phishing. Threats whether a protest or more malicious and to shut you down or defraud you and your customers. Leaked customer information can lead to an investigation. The most important thing to know about any threat is the exact mechanism use changes constantly. The next thing to understand is that it’s big and getting bigger fast, fuelled by huge increases in online interaction and the popularity of the smart mobile devices.
The key challenge in cyber security is constant vigilant 24/7. The core disciplines are checking each security event, identifying the true threats, and taking counter measures. The Federal government has introduced a gateway consolidation program to improve cyber security for government. The goal is a smaller number of well-managed gateways available to more agencies.
The Defense Signals Directorate (DSD) who advised government and business on internet security in Australia, have identified the top 35 threats and what the appopriate counter measures are. It’s called the Catch Patch Match program, a roadmap to better security.
So what should you look for in a best practice gateway? The baseline is scale and redundancy in best of breed security systems and the skills to run them 24/7. More important is a high-level of certification. ASIO-T4 for the security, DSD gateway compliance, ISO-27001 for systems, and PCI for financial transactions. All managed by security operations centre directly linked to global cyber policing bodies like CERT, the Australian Federal Police, and DSD in Australia.
Most importantly, a supply with two completely geographically redundant gateways in Australia owned and run by an Australian company. The data residency and US patriot act protection.
